If it's been at least three years since your diagnosis, please take a moment to answer this poll. Let's give patients some HOPE! You can also respond to my post and explain your experience.
Lately I have been thinking about
resilience. According to the Mayo Clinic: "People with resilience harness inner strengths and rebound more quickly from a setback or challenge, whether it's a job loss, an illness or the death of a loved one."
I don't know about you, but it has taken me a while to learn resilience. Some people seem to have more of it than others. For example, there are children who suffer all types of trauma, yet they continue to do well in school, even going on to college and creating a meaningful and positive life for themselves. These people are exceptionally resilient.
As for me, bouncing back from surgery and limitations has taken a while, and it's definitely a process. Here is a
resilience test to see where you stand. And here are
ten ways to build resilience in your life.
The hope that we can offer patients who are in treatment is that people do bounce back from this experience. We grow and gain strength and have meaningful lives. It's taken me nearly four years, but I realize that these days I don't get frustrated about what I can't do. I am focused on what I can do, and I have learned to work WITH my limitations.
How about you?
